I mentioned that “Structurally recyclable, basically disposable” has been to Geneva for what it will probably be its last show.
Here are a couple of photographs showing the exhibition and the venue.

Even though it wasn’t quite a piece of cake to get this exhibition up, I eventually prevailed and this is how the panels (grilles) were put together to channel people through the two installations.

Since the exhibition did not go on for a long time, I spent the entire week in Geneva and one of my favorite spots was the first floor, which allowed me to work, read and keep an eye on the exhibition all at the same time.

So the project is now officially over and I plan on writing a longer summary of my impressions in the following days.

After almost having to delay the exhibition due to the university’s mishaps (read: unprofessionalism), the photos went up as planned on saturday afternoon ready for a short and quiet vernissage.

Now I am here for the rest of week, occasionally coming by the university to check that everything is in place. If anyone intends to come and ask me questions or have a chat, please let me know in advance so that I can make sure to be there at that time.

I also have to announce that due to the aforementioned issues, I will demount the exhibition on Friday evening, which means that the photos will not be up anymore on Saturday. It’s a security measure because I need to catch a train on Saturday and I can’t risk to miss due to the absence of university personnel.

Please do come to see the exhibition while it’s there, as it will probably be the last show for “Structurally recyclable, basically disposable“.

I’ll spare you the]]> As you have probably noticed from the change in the graphic on the side bar –> and the poster on the general project page, next up for the traveling exhibition is the city of Geneva.
I’ll spare you the “going back to the roots” inner dialogue, as I have studied and worked in Geneva, and I’ll go directly to the practical information about the exhibition.

I will personally be there during the seven days of the show, from the 12th to the 19th in the hall of the University of Geneva, Uni-Mail building.
The building is closed on Sundays, it’s open Mondays to Fridays from 7h30 to 23h00 and from 7h30 to 17h30 on Saturdays.
The vernissage will be held on Saturday the 12th, from 16h00 to 18h00. The fixed hours are due to the special nature of the building: being a university, we only have limited margin of maneuver.
Also, please note that the on the last day, Saturday the 19th, the exhibition will only be visible until 10 am as I have to catch a train in the early afternoon.

Notwithstanding the technicalities, I am very excited to bring the photographs to Geneva, to hear and see some feedback and most of all, to meet the visitors. Drinks and snacks will be available the night of the vernissage, so don’t miss the opportunity.

It’s been a crazy week. Preparing for an exhibition is never easy and preparing for it and at the same time managing its “marketing” aspects (flyers, posters and what not) is incredibly stressful. I am saying nothing new here I am sure.

And whenever you are involved in such a preparation, so many things go wrong and so many things that you told yourself should never be done at the last minute, end up being done at the very last minute. I am not so sure whether these problems could entirely be avoided, but oh well, I promise myself to learn and improve each time around.

So, tomorrow, Monday, the flyer campaign will start (try to picture me transporting 3000 flyers to the agency), the last minute things will be dealt with, I will check on the status of my prints with the lab and I will hopefully be fully satisfied.

In all this, I am trying to have a relaxing weekend but I somehow ended up writing this blog post and scanning some more photos, completely unrelated to the project.

As you know, the project led me to travel to different countries, one of them being Switzerland, Geneva to be exact.
It was weird to be back to the city, to a place that has offered me so much, yet made me a more cynical person that I was when I first arrived.
On the way to the airport, after the shooting and after I had said goodbye to my dearest friend B., I said my very personal “à bientôt” to Geneva.
I do take my work seriously, but I try to limit the extent to which I do, simply because all the ideas that go into a picture, into the act of facing the subject and releasing the shutter, are sometimes extremely simple. In this case, I was trying not to think about how much I will miss B., my mixed feelings towards the city of Geneva (I miss it, yet, don’t crave for it) and I was trying to mask and tame my anxiety for the next shooting and the project coming to the end.
Arriving in Geneva for the shooting has been much like coming home but to a home that is distant and faded. I felt grounded and comfortable when dining with my friends, even when there is so much to be said, so many issues to be faced, one of them being that we have all changed to become people who are not as naturally bound to get along as before. Yet, call it my simple desire to have some sort of social exchanges, I missed them.
In the end, the honest thing to be said here is that I miss my university years, despite the stress and the lack of time, despite the drama. It’s not a very interesting take on my trip to Geneva, but it is what it is.

Tango night in Geneva

One of the most beautiful times in Geneva was the spring. The city parks are colorful and the season of festivals and cultural events is just starting.
The Garden Party is one of them, followed then by “la Fête de la musique” and later on “les Fêtes de Genève” which officially end the summer time.
The portfolio I have added is called “Tango nights“. During the Garden Party in 2007 I went to the open air demonstration of a tango dance, the teacher and owner being a friend of mine. It was raining, the bare foot dancers and the fantastic athmosphere made it very easy to be inspired and go home with these shots, which seek to freeze a series of emotions, bursts of colors and perfect movements I had the luck to witness.

Looking at the pictures brings me back and I can almost still hear the music, accompanied by the raindrops.
