Iapetus - Vase VIII

Iapetus is among my favorite of all the vases. I had to make it twice because the first one had an accident in the kiln and I am glad because the second version looks so much better. Iapetus is a special moon: it is the third largest of all of Saturn's moons and its surface is fascinating. It has a dark hemisphere and a light colored hemisphere, as well as a massive ridge running around the moon. 

This small vase is the eight vase in the series 274 moons / 274 vases. Iapetus was made entirely by hand with a groggy red stoneware clay. I glazed it with my white matte glaze and my lava glaze. The inside features a white matte glaze. 

Iapetus is not perfectly round. 

The vase was coiled by hand and fired up to 1240C. 

The vase is functional and measures 11 cm in height and around 8,5 cm in diameter at its middle (largest) point. 

All the glazes are formulated and made by me.
