In April of 2025, I researched and wrote an article about how clay that has been fired and left to cool in place can give us information about the magnetic field of the Earth at the time of cooling. The article investigated the beginnings of electromagnetism and the field of archaeomagnetism.
Ever since then, I have been researching other types of ways in which our planet keeps memory, through what scientists call “archives of nature”. Dagomar Degroot defines them as natural records that preserve evidence of past climate conditions. These archives, which include stalagmites, ice cores, tree rings, ocean floors, to name a few, can tell us information about the past climate, the way our planet functioned and the way our ancestors had to adapt to live on it. They also help us understand how climate change will affect us, considering the rate of change is unprecedented.
The vases part of this series are built to remind us of the ice cores that scientists extract from Antarctica's ancient ice to study the evolution of those sheets and the climate.
The vases are coiled entirely by hand, reaching up to 50 cm in height. The surface treatment explores the layering of strata and information. Glazes are juxtaposed. These vases keep memory - by definition clay keeps memory - but the pieces act as canvases where memory becomes visible to us.
